Top quality extensions like those shown here use remy cuticle intact hair which remains uncoated of silicones. Lower grade hair extensions are applied using cheaper Chinese hair which is readily available but too thick to suit European hair so it is thinned and stripped of the cuticle using an aggressive acid bath.

This means to bring a shine to the hair a colouring is applied and then the hair is coated with a silicone layer. The layer wears off after a few washes and leaves the hair looking dull and the surface roughens. This is why when cheaper hair is applied after 3-4 weeks the hair becomes unmanageable and unsightly……
